About LR Antiques

LR Antiques is an internationally recognized Houston-based Antiques firm which offers rare and high-quality European Furniture, Fine Art Paintings, Sculpture, Art Glass and Fine Estate Jewelry.  We have a reputation for selling objects of superb craftsmanship and design, as well as pleasing customers through long-term relationships built on trust. The short history of our business illustrates the American Dream.  In 1987 Russian born sisters Lora Levin and Rachel Bley, together with Lora’s husband Larry Levin, opened a part time weekend antique business in a small space at a local antique mall.  Within six months we expanded and began traveling to Europe to purchase inventory.  For three years we operated LR Antiques on a part time basis while we worked full time and raised our families.   Initially, we purchased in England, specifically Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and Sheffield, shipping large containers of antique furniture including among other objects, chests, tables, consoles, chairs in many styles, such as Primitives, Chippendale, Georgian and Victorian.  After a time we began to buy in France, shopping in Rennes in Brittany for French Art Deco furniture, then in Brest where we bought Country French, Louis III, XIV, XV, XVI, Louis Phillippe, and our favorite from the Napoleonic period – French Empire.  Within the large containers we shipped to Houston were antique mirrors, furniture, fine art, fine porcelain and French rustic country items. By 1991 we achieved our dream of working full time in our business.  We purchased our two-story building in the West University / Houston museum district area.  After renovating and enlarging, LR Antiques’ 4000 square foot store began to attract a national and international clientele who desired rare and important antiques. Changes in aesthetic taste, as well as in the economy led to interesting acquisitions.  To accommodate collectors and interior designers who favored contemporary minimalist architectural styles, we added Proper Art Deco and antique Biedermeier to our finds.  Soon we were shipping containers from Vienna Austria and Germany filled with antiques of Proper Art Deco and Biedermeier secretaries, chests, and couches.  Our collection included a breathtaking array of woods, such as Birch, Burl Walnut, Malaysian Amboyna, African Ebony and Zebra Wood, Brazilian Rosewood, Cuban Mahogany. Antique porcelain became one of our specialties, when we acquired significant porcelain collections from local and European private estates, with various hand painted vases, figurines, plates, plaques, and ormolu mounted ewers by Sevres, Royal Vienna, Old Paris, Meissen, and KPM.  Our extensive antique porcelain and ceramics inventory included a variety of plates and platters by Wedgwood, Minton, Campier, French Majolica as well as antique fiancés in various colors and shapes.  Antique glass and crystal are a major part of our business, we sell wheel cut and acid etched antique Cameo Art Glass of original French Daum Nancy, Galle, Delatte, Legras, Schneider and Muller Freres, among others.  Our collection includes long neck decanters as well as sets of crystal stemware in various sizes, shapes and colors, some with gold decoration, hand painted scenes, portraits, mythological scenes, garlands, jewels that were hand-blown and cut by the best artists in famous European manufactories as – Baccarat, Val Saint Lambert, St. Louis, Moser, as well as antique and vintage Murano.   While shopping in European wholesale markets, we noticed that many wholesalers had restoration facilities on their premises.  Larry Levin became fascinated with the process and techniques of restoring 100-year-old objects.  Our European sellers were generous, and shared their knowledge of restoration techniques, as well as restoration products.  We began to buy furniture oil, waxes, French polish lacquer, antique hardware, exotic veneers, bolts and nuts for beds, and old keys for chests.  Larry studied and became proficient, and ultimately expanded LR Antiques to include LR Antiques Refinishing and Restoration.  While continuing to take care of the needs of Houstonians and local decorators, we also collaborate with insurance companies, as well as water and fire damage restoration companies and moving companies.  After ten years, our restoration business needed a larger facility, so we moved to our current location: LR Antiques Refinishing and Restoration   3580 Lang Rd.
