We have for sale an outstanding Antique 19th century Flamed Mahogany Biedermeier Roll Top desk with pull out trays on each side of the desk for additional workspace. Created about 1850, The Roll Top desk is constructed in the best tradition of the German / Austrian cabinet makers. Its Flamed Cuban Mahogany wood grain pattern is flawless and dramatic, and exquisitely runs from the top to the very bottom of the desk, creating an unforgettable effect. This is one of the finest desks we have seen from this era.
The top portion with drop front lid reveals a fitted drawer interior with open shelve in the middle, with a hidden wood tray held by a metal spring at the top of the opening. The middle portion behind the tambour reveals a fitted interior with four drawers and a small door in the middle. If you pull out the right bottom drawer and position the working service tray 5" in - you will find a small secret tray that is attached to the writing surface. The pullout working surface creates a large working space and is decorated with new burgundy colored natural leather and 24K gold hand tooled decoration. The very bottom portion of the desk is fitted with a long pull out drawer and underneath it to the left are three (3) pull out drawers, the middle is a door with a single shelve in the middle, and to the right is a false three (3) drawer door which reveals a single shelve inside. On the top right side you will find a metal latch, by pulling it forward it will open a far right outside panel to reveal a large secret opening (storage compartment). After hiding valuable objects in the hidden compartment, simply push the panel in until you hear a soft latching sound.
This desk was obviously commissioned and custom made for the use of a very wealthy businessman, lawyer, banker or type of person who needed to hide valuable objects or documents. All of the drawers, doors, lids and tambours are fitted with locks that have different mechanisms and matching keys.
